Nine to Five?

I have plenty to say about the new job, but it’ll have to wait. It’s 6:45am, and I just dragged my ass in the door. Hopefully the 20 to 40 minute commute will get less stressful once I have corrected my vehicular dilemma (the Mrs. now needs a pirate’s patch on her left eye, by the way) and gotten my body accustomed to this work-all-night-but-try-not-to-sleep-all-day thing.

I had a very satisfying RTFM moment at work today. I’m still not very comfortable calling myself a Linux nerd, but I was able to correct a problem on a RedHat box that had stumped every other tech in the office.

And I didn’t even have to call Daniel and wake him up at 2am.

Yesterday, as I was leaving my first day of work, there was a major catastrophe and I ended up working 3 extra hours to help put out fires. As a result, the owner of the company bought me (and my boss) dinner. We almost ate at Hamburger Mary’s, because my boss wanted to check it out. I don’t think he knew the, um, theme of the place. I did. But I said, “what the hell, it’s food.” But the kitchen was closed, so we ate at Snookie’s Bar & Grill, the same place we went for lunch. Good food.

In hindsight, I’m glad the kitchen was closed at Mary’s. Beforehand, I didn’t think I’d have a problem eating there. However, after actually being in there for 2 minutes while finding out if Mary’s grill was still half as flaming as the clientelle were, I decided that Mary’s really wasn’t the kind of place at which this often-effeminate, heterosexual boy wanted to share a meal with his knit-sweatered, bearded, thirtysomething boss.

All in all, I like the job so far.
