My 120GB harddrive has decided to do something weird to my entire Audio directory. The rest of the partition (NTFS) is fine, but anytime I try to access the Audio directory (which is in the root of the drive), I get an “I/O device error.” I mounted it in Debian, and had pretty much the same effect. I could browse/read/use/write/rape any directory tree just fine, except for /Audio. Linux gave me a “ntfs_end_buffer_async_read error.”
I have acquired full versions of three different data recovery tools, the first of which is attempting to do its thang as we speak. I’ll let it be for the night and try to get some sleep, but if none of these apps works, I’m going to get desparate. Anybody have any successful data recovery stories? I worked for a web hosting company, I know what it would cost to have this done professionally, but I’d like to do everything within (or even slightly beyond) my own means before I even contemplate doing something so stupid as to give a few thousand dollars to some schmuck so that he can attempt to recover every piece of digital audio I’ve amassed/recorded since the eighties.
Speaking of which… Dad, if you’re reading this, check out this.
