Working Undercover For the Man

November 2nd, 2006 · No Comments · 9to5, Daily, Potpourri

More than ever before, these last few weeks have been extremely busy at work. This job has taught me that some people really do work for a living. Most days are non-stop “excitement” from the moment I set foot in the building until I leave. It’s rare that I don’t eat lunch at my desk while I continue to put out fires and try to prevent bigger ones.

And then the fires follow me home.

I like my new boss. But then again, I liked my old one a lot, too. It’s a strange situation because 90% of the stuff I do still involves the guy I used to call my boss, but now I report directly to his boss instead of him.

For the first time I’m having to make some big, managementish decisions, and it’s a little scary. Overall it feels good, though, because I think I’m doing most things the right way. It gets a little frustrating when certain people don’t cooperate, or they drag their feet or just plain don’t want to do the work they need to do. But I’m gettin’ it done. I’ma git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git- git I’m gittin’ it done.

Weekly staff meetings now. I kinda like that. It lights a fire under my ass and forces me to track how well I’m doing. No gold stars or demerits or anything, just roundtable shit.

I really need to clean my desk off, and for two reasons. One, so my wife won’t kill me. And two, so Mandy will start sitting on my desk again.
