Why was the video always scrambled on premium cable porn but not the audio?

Lately I can’t seem to stay focused on any desk-based tasks at home unless there’s some sort of video playing on at least part of one of my monitors. For the last couple of weeks I’ve been watching Frasier. All of it. In order.

I’ve hit season 4, and this particular batch of files I, um, acquired are not high-quality DVD rips like the first 3 I watched. They’re all recordings from various syndication markets. They’re all watermarked with some station logo or another, and some of them even have swedish subtitles. Several of them are barely watchable, at least by today’s standards.

As much as I would definitely prefer to have commercial quality copies of these episodes, it’s kind of nostalgic watching some of them like this. It reminds me of the little 13″ black-and-white television I had in my bedroom until I was 15 or so. When I was little, I’d turn the thing on way past my bed time, keep the volume low as possible, and watch Star Trek until I couldn’t keep my eyes open. It was really weird watching first-run, early nineties television shows on a blurry, monochrome screen. It made some of the scary episodes even creepier.
